There's Something Weirdly Comforting About Playing Games That Are Just 'Okay' – Kotaku

When I started playing My Time At Portia, I wasn’t expecting much. A few YouTubers I liked were playing it and I just wanted to check it out. It didn’t really wow me, but also wasn’t egregiously bad. It was just… fine. I still played it until midnight.I love perfectly crafted, engaging, smart games as much as any other video game aficionado. But I’m 29 now, and I get tired. Sometimes when I get off work, the last thing I want to do is concentrate on strategy or a complex story. At the same time, getting velcroed to my couch and just watching YouTube for hours makes me feel depressed and lazy. On those nights, sometimes I turn to a game that’s just “okay.”There’s something charming about a game that’s not very good, but also no...

The following blog post, unless otherwise noted, was written by a member of Gamasutra’s community. The thoughts and opinions expressed are those of the writer and not Gamasutra or its parent company. The official launch of the Apple App Store in July 2008 has started a new era for game developers. Having an SDK in their hands, from that time they have been able to influence the overall gaming market. Even though the games account for only 31% of downloads in the App Store, they represent 75% of the total consumer spend. But even more significant the growth of mobile games over the other types of gaming. While PC and Console games have been growing year-on-year with a similar growth rate of 11%, ...

Netflix, but for video games – The Economist

Games News
THE ABILITY to stream films and songs over the internet has upended the entertainment industry, but the $140bn market in video-gaming has resisted the revolution. That may soon change. A battle is brewing between big media and technology firms to see who—if anybody—can become the Netflix of video games. In October Google began tests of a cloud-gaming service called “Project Stream”, using a big-budget game, “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” (a still is pictured). The game was designed to run on dedicated consoles and beefy PCs. But with the computational heavy-lifting shifted to Google’s data-centres, even a modest laptop could have the game’s sumptuous take on the Peloponnesian War piped to it over the web. Those initial trials are now finis...
One chart perfectly illustrates the needless complexity of buying video games in 2019 – INSIDER

One chart perfectly illustrates the needless complexity of buying video games in 2019 – INSIDER

Games News
Video games should not require a spreadsheet to figure out when you can buy them. As game publishers have struggled to extract more profits from increasingly expensive video game productions, some have turned to complex "early access" programs. EA's upcoming blockbuster debut, "Anthem," is the latest example of this phenomenon. At the risk of sounding like Millennial Andy Rooney™, I have to say this: Back when I was growing up, video games were much simpler to buy and play. You went to a store, picked out a game for your video game console, and bought the game. There were no paid online services you had to buy first (like Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus), and no "early access" options to pay more in order to play the game early. When you got home with your game, you didn't...

At The Gates is the first solo project from Civilization V’s lead designer, Jon Shafer. Like Civ, it is also a 4X strategy game, but, unlike Sid Meier’s series, you play the barbarians. Set during the twilight years of the Roman Empire, you start At The Gates as a small tribe surviving between the folds of large nations. You must form alliances with other tribes to grow, exploit the land to keep your people happy, and keep out of the way of Roman army. That can be a significant challenge, as the resources available deplete the longer you stay – pushing you to take on a nomadic lifestyle early in the game. Rich recently spoke with Shafer about why At The Gates took seven years to make and the toll the game’s development took on him. They also discus...

Games Review
REVIEW – Back in the day I was obsessed with handheld game devices. I had the original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Atari Lynx, and the original Sony PSP. I still have several of those units but sadly, I no longer have an original Game Boy. Let’s check it out. What is it? The Bittboy is a small handheld game console that can play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and NES ROMS. What’s in the box?
